This is an amusing list everyone in the house came up with that will give you a sense of how far your money could go here. With the current exchange rate, one sol is the equivalent of 36 cents in the US.
For 1 sol you can buy ……
A trip downtown in a Colectivo (a shared taxi)
A trip to Nuevo Chimbote, the more affluent suburb, in a Combi (a public van)
A moto ride (battery powered bike with carriage) from the local market
One skewer of 3 Anticuchos (cow hearts) don’t knock it until you have tired it – it is probably the only soft cut of meat you will find here – The cattle here are grass fed which makes the meat tuff.
2 trips to the public restroom
2 rolls of TP
Bottled water
A 16 oz. bottle of Kola Real – the Peruvian version of coke
9 rolls (buying this type of bread is a daily ritual for most families)
10 cough drops (which they consider is candy) or 10 pieces of gum
In the line of produce your choice of 5 eggs, 10 mini bananas, 2 apples, 20 small green limes, 10 medium sized tomatoes, 1 avocado, a head of broccoli, or 2 red bell peppers
2 oz. of fish to make ceviche
2 roses
A chocolate sublime bar
The world’s smallest serving of ice cream
A glass of fresh juice on the street
Select baked goods in a bakery
One hour of internet in an internet café
Not so bad for 36 cents no?
