Feliz Navidad

Feliz cumpleaños Jesus! In Peru, birthday celebrations start at the stroke of midnight and Jesus was no exception. We attended mass Christmas eve at San Francisco church, the same parish where we teach English classes during the week. Each family brought their baby Jesus from their manger scenes into the church and left them at the altar to be blessed during mass. Afterward we joined a Peruvian family in their home for the traditional dinner. At midnight, right before dinner, everyone files out the front door to hug and wish all their neighbors in the street feliz navidad and to watch a few fireworks. It was a beautiful display of friendship and faith. After hugs and fireworks, families go back inside for a meal of turkey, hot chocolate and panatone (fruit cake).

Below is a fun Peruvian Christmas song you can find on youtube called “Cholito Jesus” that describes a Peruvian baby Jesus. Feliz Navidad!
